In Praise of Lightness

The Magic of Ballet in the Art of Edgar Degas

The world of ballet dancers was one of the central themes in the work of Edgar Degas. Time and again, the artist returned to the dance studio, to rehearsals, backstage, and to the stage itself, seeking to capture that elusive moment when immense physical and mental effort is transformed into movement that appears light, graceful, airy, and almost weightless.

The exhibition In Praise of Lightness invites viewers on a journey through Degas’s world of ballet dancers – from arduous training and iron discipline, through preparations and moments of waiting backstage, to the radiance of the stage, its lights, and moments of flight and glory. From there, the gaze returns to the end of the performance, to exhaustion and rest.

The remarkable drawings and paintings reveal the tension that so fascinated Degas: between lightness and weight, effort and elegance, the Sisyphean labour behind the scenes and the dazzling illusion revealed on stage.

It is a world of movement, colour, light, and fleeting moments – a world in which Degas succeeded in endowing the transient instant with a dimension of timeless beauty.

Each work is presented in a space designed especially for it, in the distinctive style characteristic of The Salon gallery, and is accompanied by close-up views that invite the viewer to examine the details of the painting and observe how patches of colour create the gleaming pink ballet shoes, the airy tulle skirt, or a sparkling piece of gold jewellery.

Degas’s highly individual style is characterised by painterly patches of colour, softened contours, and a richly textured surface that at times creates a patina-like veil over the images. Close observation reveals that in certain areas the figure dissolves into patches of colour and shape, to the point where the painting appears almost entirely abstract.

The exhibition is accompanied by selected pieces from the classical repertoire, including works by Frédéric Chopin, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy, and Erik Satie. The music heightens the sense of movement, weightlessness, and radiance, adding a further experiential dimension to the viewing of the works.

Exhibition duration: one hour and twenty minutes
